Towards a Global Reporting Standard: Transparency in the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Research

The International Science Council (ISC) has opened a survey for the research community on responsible reporting of artificial intelligence use. The role of artificial intelligence in research has grown, but there are not yet very comprehensive general principles governing the transparency and responsible use of AI. ISC is leading an initiative aimed at developing a global reporting standard for disclosing the use of AI in research.

At present, practices for reporting the use of AI in scientific articles and other publications vary across disciplines, journals, and countries. Many publishers have publication-specific disclosure requirements in place, but no unified standard currently exists.

To develop the standard, the ISC is collaborating with the World Conference on Research Integrity Foundation (WCRIF), the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM), and the Global Young Academy (GYA). This joint initiative will be one of the focus tracks at next year’s World Conference on Research Integrity in Vancouver.

The objective is to create a reporting standard that is applicable across disciplines, makes disclosures of AI use comparable, and supports the application of research ethics principles.

The preparatory process includes three consultation rounds. The first survey round is currently underway and will remain open until the end of February 2026.
